Untouched rolling valleys and gentle, forested mountains make the Mittelkärnten/Central Carinthia region a plentiful playground for any nature lover. It offers everything from leisurely hikes to extensive cycling tours and demanding trails, coupled with culture and culinary pleasures.
Endless possibilities for active holidaymakers
Gently sloping hills, picturesque towns and villages, historical architecture and ancient places of worship meet award-winning gastronomy: Mittelkärnten is truly heavenly for those who appreciate the finer things in life. From the Gurktal Alps to the rolling foothills of the Saualpe in the east, hikers and leisure-seekers will find everything they have always dreamed of: family-friendly walks, demanding adventure paths and many new and old pilgrim trails offering an opportunity for spiritual reflection. The four ‘holy mountains’ (Magdalensberg, Ulrichsberg, Veitsberg and Lorenziberg), the ‘herb paradise’ of the Gurktal valley, the mysterious Görtschitztal valley, the sun-kissed Glantal valley and the Hörfeld Moor make for unforgettable holidays. And they all nestle into a welcoming landscape whose soft slopes will soothe your eyes and soul.
Enjoyable cycling guaranteed
Specially signposted, themed routes take you through the Glantal, Gurktal, Metnitztal and Görtschitztal valleys and to the towns of Friesach and St. Georgen on Lake Längsee. Spectacular views and incredible sights meet culinary highlights on these trails, which are perfect for families and active nature lovers. To promote sustainability, all routes are easily accessible on public transport.
A destination for all seasons
If you visit in summer, we recommend that you include at least one of our lovely little bathing lakes into your route planning. We have the lakes Längsee, Hörzendorfersee, Urbansee, Goggausee and Kraigersee – each of them offers crystal-clear water for a refreshing dip. In winter, our three compact family ski resorts Simonhöhe, Eberstein/Saualpe and Flattnitz are choice destinations for unforgettable adventures in the snow. From uphill tobogganing and snowshoe hikes to cross-country and downhill skiing, endless activities await. And the best part? There are no huge crowds nor long queues in the Mittelkärnten ski areas.
Treasure hunts on ancient paths
The cultural treasures of Mittelkärnten will make your heart beat faster. Its ancient pilgrim trails and trade routes hold plenty of secrets for you to explore. From old castles and palaces to museums showcasing contemporary art, the region guarantees eventful days for culture lovers. Little historical towns and markets beckon you to visit alongside other fascinating destinations. Burg Hochosterwitz castle, one of Carinthia’s most famous tourist attractions, is truly a sight to behold. Just as exciting: the medieval castle town of Friesach, which has the only surviving water-bearing moat in Central Europe.
Spectacular events and outstanding cultural and creative offers skilfully merge the old with the contemporary. Around here, traditions and customs are not confined to the museums. The people of Mittelkärnten actively live their heritage throughout the year.
No day without a feast
In Mittelkärnten, guests are treated to warm hospitality and a rich choice of delicacies. Idyllic Buschenschenke farmhouse inns serve hearty meals, while traditional taverns will pamper your palate with typical treats from the region. Gourmets get to indulge their every culinary passion here – the sheer amount of Gault Millau toques and Falstaff points awarded to the restaurants of Mittelkärnten proves it. On top of this, each of the area’s valleys has its own specialities: make sure you sample some game in the Metnitztal valley, a bite of air-smoked bacon in the Gurktal valley, and a glass of fine wine from the area around St. Georgen on Lake Längsee, which is home to Carinthia’s largest wine-growing community. All those seeking regional goods and authentic products must seek out the businesses in the ‘Marktplatz Mittelkärnten’ initiative: quality-focused restaurants, farmers, craftspeople, wine-growers, beer-brewers and creative refiners who passionately create and process regional products of the highest standards. It’s no surprise that Mittelkärnten has become an integral part of the international slow-food travel network.
