The history of the place is closely related to the Millstatt Abbey, which has been the spiritual and cultural centre of Upper Carinthia for centuries and is one of the most important Romanesque buildings in Carinthia. The Millstatt Abbey Museum was founded in 1981 by the university professor Dr. Franz Nikolasch and offers a comprehensive overview of the history of Millstatt and the related cultural assets.
Tips: The abbey church and the Romanesque cloister are freely accessible from 10 am. The local history and tourism museum in Obermillstatt 7 documents the period from 1848 onwards, with food available in the museum’s lounge.
